Rules of Internet Marketing

by Norhafidz on March 31, 2008

Since I came online in early 2007, I’ve used a lot of marketing methods to promote website. Some worked, and some didn’t. I learned it the long-hard way but I took it as lessons. These are the factors that I think the basic of Internet Marketing

1) Focus on your content

I believe, the quality of a website is measured from its content. So, the most important tool of Internet Marketing is your content. If you provide your content with originality and with high quality (content or products, if you run an E-Commerce site), people will naturally come to read and visit your site. They will even recommend it to friends. Other websites owners will want to link to your content and this will help increase your search engine ranking

2) Consistency is the Key

Always remember that Internet Marketing is not a one-shot deal and do not require consistent effort from you. It is something that you have to do on a regular basis. You have to varies the technique, try to be creative and not depending on one technique. Competition is getting really tough with millions or even more websites have emerged these days.

3) Make a List

Organize and write everything you want to do in a list. Try to mix a lot of marketing techniques in that list. The risks are too high if you put all eggs in a basket. Let say, you are high on Google’s Ranking, you maybe no. 1 now but once Google update their algorithm, you might go further downward. You may loose more than 50% of your visitors. Review you competitors strategy and copy what they have done. Consider both paid and ‘free’ techniques For example:

  • Banner Advertising
  • Search Engine Optimisation Services
  • Article Marketing
  • Email Marketing
  • Pay Per Click advertising
  • Joining Forums and Communities (of course, no spamming activities)

4) Measure your Results

Always remember to track and measure all your internet marketing activities, it is for you to know which ones work and which ones don’t. Monitor your web statistics or web logs regularly to get clear idea of the most effective Internet Marketing strategy for you. Only by looking at these statistics can you assess how well your internet marketing techniques are doing.

Cloaking Your Affiliate Links

by Norhafidz on March 25, 2008

If you are an affiliate marketer, you might want to consider cloaking your affiliate links for some of these reasons:

  • Readers are more likely to click on clean links thus increasing your conversion rate.
  • Normal affiliate links are long.
  • Preventing other affiliates from hijacking your links.

You can replace long URLs with fast, short, server-side redirects, so that people won’t feel “pitched” and won’t be turned off by links that are obviously affiliate links. There are many ways to cloak your affiliate links. I’m going to cover 2 simplest method and easiest method.

Cloak Your Affiliate Links using .htaccess

Create a directory on your site called “go” (remember, you can always change the name according to your needs). In the “go” directory, create a directory for each of your affiliate links. For example, create a directory called “go” and a directory in the “go” directory called “norhafidz”. In the “norhafidz” directory, put a file called .htaccess — you can create it by using a plain text editor like notepad.

There should be a line in the .htaccess which look like this:

Redirect /go/norhafidz http://www.norhafidz.com/affialiate=?norhafidz

where http://www.yourdomain.com/go/norhafidz will be your new affiliate links and http://www.norhafidz.com/affialiate=?norhafidz is your initial affiliate links.

Note that, there should be 3 parts on .htaccess file on a line: Redirect command, the location of directory (/go/norhafidz) and the initial URL of your affiliate links (http://www.norhafidz.com/affialiate=?norhafidz). Each must be separated by a single space.

So, if you are giving out the url of http://yourdomain.com/go/norhafidz this will send people to http://www.norhafidz.com/affialiate=?norhafidz which is your initial affiliate links.

Cloak Your Affiliate Links using URL Redirection Sites

This method uses Redirection Sites to “change” your affiliate links. One of my favorite site is tinyurl.com. Once you are there, just enter your affiliate link and it will be shorten in a second!

Know of an even better method? Let us know!
