I Changed My Tagline and Blog’s Title

by Norhafidz on November 26, 2008

At the end of September 2008, I was trying to test my search engine optimization knowledge by competing for a keyword. It is not about a total SEO strategy, but more of an attempt to be on top of SE ranking the wise way, which involved keyword analysis. After several analyses, I choose “make money on internet” as the phrase to compete with. The reason behind this selection is because I am trying to be another John Chow IV :)

Keyword Analysis

It is quite high in terms of search volume (per month) and from my observation, it is not highly competitive. Here’s what Google said about the phrase:

Sorry for the visual defect, I am forced to reduce the size of the image to fit it with thesis. You have to click it for a larger view. According to the father of modern and probably century-a-round search engine(I hope this incantation works), The phrase “make money on internet” received approximately 60,000+ search volume in October.

Now let’s math do the job,

60,000 search volume + not highly competitive keyword  = easy job x good keyphrase.

Well, yea it’s a bit confusing, excuse my bad math. The point here is “make money on internet” is a suitable keyword to compete with since it is not inclusiveness of high competitive keyword. How can I be so sure about that? I observed three things:

  • How many websites are competing (I didn’t assume all listed websites are competing for the keyword, some may not even competing).
  • The links structure of top ranked sites (how well linked they are).
  • How many PPC advertisers.

Some of you or some of SEO company might have different metrics in determining the competitiveness of keywords, but these were the things that I observe when I do search engine optimization. Some even develop a mathematical formula to determine the keyword competitiveness.

There is no proper and exact way of doing it. “It Works!” can only be said when you get the result. Here’s my result, and this image is taken earlier this week, the ranking might have change a bit (hopefully a bit) by now.

Again, thesis force me to compressed the image. Click the image and you’ll see it in a larger version. That smile is genuine.

No Hidden Secrets

No one knows exactly how Google’s algorithm works (some say Sergey and Larry produced them with their math lecturers :) I don’t know about that). If you ask me about SEO, I would say: “SEO is a very simple concept with the need of huge efforts”. Concentrate on both On page and Off page, these two factors must be in parallel with each other. Google has just release their complete guide of SEO to the world.

They called it “Google’s SEO Starter Guide“, and Google has done a very good job in explaining them. As far as I’m aware, most of the guides presented is concern about On page optimization. But don’t worry much, you have to understand that off page optimization is only about getting links pointing to your blog (preferably your targeted keyword as the anchor text). Produce more of this slightly better than the first-position website and you will be better than them.

These are the things that I did in my analyses, I would love to hear your ‘things’!

How To Be Titillating

by Norhafidz on November 25, 2008

Titillating is “Once you decide to titillate instead of illuminate . . . you create a climate of expectation that requires a higher and higher level of intensity according to Bill Moyers.

This is not about sex, this post is totally sex-free content. I remember when I did a post about Redtube being the hottest site of 2007, I got a lot of visitors that actually Googled for ‘Redtube’. Somehow, I strongly believe they are looking for adult video instead of Norhafidz. So this time, it is not about any titillating that means “erotic: giving sexual pleasure; sexually arousing”. It is more about how to be “pleasantly and superficially exciting” blogger.

Once you start your own blog, I believe you might realize how important it is to be different. Being able to entertain and captivate your readers are crucial to your readership growth. It’s pretty obvious that no one is going to stay on your blog unless you have what they want or you are Mostly Lisa (she’s amazing) :)

Here’s a list of how you can probably change your way of handling your blog and be a titillating blogger:

Be Unique

Tantalizing others is not an easy job, the very first thing you need to consider is being unique in every aspect of blogging. From your theme to your style of writing. In case you want to do the same like what JC did, you have to make sure you do it better.

Recite What Your Readers Want

This is obviously a must in order to be titillating. No one’s going to stay on a blog that does not have enough information to them. Find out what your readers want and literally deliver it to them.

Keep Your Seriousness Level Low

Don’t be so serious about what you write, come up with some jokes and humor and make your readers laugh. Great speakers have been using it all this time and this technique prove to works. We’re too busy with our yarn and forget some of our readers fall asleep. Wake them up with some good jokes.

Consistency is the Key

Not saying that we need a post for each day, just don’t leave a huge gap of time without a single new post in your blog. A huge gap can be wrongly-interpreted by your visitors. First time visitors might assume that your blog and you are no longer alive and regular visitors might assume you are dead (yea I know, they both have a same assumption). Whatever their ascriptions might be, one thing is for sure, you are not titillating enough to them.

Diversify Your Post

Variation is badly needed in writing an article. I’ve come up with some bloggers that didn’t put much concern about this. Most of them write a long articles and forgot that a post is not just about words. Put a couple of related pictures in your post as to keep your readers’ boredom level low. Brian Clark is one of great examples of blogger that diversify their post. Don’t afraid to try new ideas. You can also embedded videos in your post.

There are indeed many other factors that can turn you to a more titillating blogger. What would you add or take away from the list?

It’s All About Traffic And Good Content

by Norhafidz on November 16, 2008

I found this on tube, I believe it is originally from John Chow dot com. Though I am convinced that this has been a popular video and most of you guys have watch it, I am still hard nosed to share it. JC talked about why you should write about topics that you passionate the most in order to make money online. Enjoy the video!

Though it’s only a 4 minutes video, JC shared some valuable information about how he made money online and some logical ways to find advertisers.
